FREE Upcoming Webinar Highlights CREF University Scholarship Awardee, Kefang Nie

Each year, CREF offers its University Scholarship to support students engaged in compost research while fostering future careers in the composting industry. On September 9, we’re excited to highlight the research of our 2024 awardee, Kefang Nie, at a FREE webinar.

Kefang, a Ph.D. student in Epidemiology from University of California, Davis, investigated pathogenic microbial contamination in commercial, community/urban composting, and vermicomposting systems across California. Her project focused on pathogens in finished compost to better understand the operational impacts and potential food safety risks of using finished compost as a soil amendment. Kefang’s research findings point to specific, actionable gaps in feedstock preparation, process control, and post-production moisture management that composters can address to improve microbial safety.
