COMPILATION OF COMPOST ANALYSIS DATA

The following links provide access to two sets of compiled data covering a broad selection of compost quality characteristics. In both data sets, the composts are grouped according to the primary feedstocks from which they were manufactured.

For details about the compost analysis used, consult the test Methods for the Examination of Composting and Compost (TMECC), available at https://www.compostingcouncil.org/page/tmecc. Good information about interpreting laboratory analysis is presented in “Interpreting Composting Analysis” by Sullivan, Bary, Miller and Brewer, published by the Oregon State University Extension Service and available at https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/em9217.

  1. The first link connects to compost data provided through courtesy of the Pennsylvania State University Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory (https://agsci.psu.edu/aasl). This data, compiled and summarized by John Spargo and Melissa Green of the Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory (AASL), was generated from samples submitted to the AASL between January 2003 and April 2020.

The second link is a year-by-year summary of the characteristics of compost samples submitted for laboratory analysis by compost producers that participate in the US, Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) program (https://www.compostingcouncil.org/page/CompostManufacturersSTA). This data is provided courtesy of Soil Control Lab, which performed the analysis and compilation for the U.S. Composting Council’s STA program (http://www.controllabs.com/index.htm).
