International Compost Awareness Week 2026 Wraps with National Impact
International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) 2026 has come to a close after a powerful week of education, engagement, and celebration around the world. Held May 3 to 9, this year’s theme, “Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us,” brought communities together to highlight the vital role compost plays in soil health, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable living.
From small towns to major cities, ICAW 2026 was marked by widespread participation across the United States and internationally. Municipalities, schools, compost facilities, universities, nonprofits, and community organizations hosted a wide range of events designed to educate and inspire. Activities included compost workshops, facility tours, school programs, public festivals, compost giveaways, and local government proclamations recognizing the importance of composting.
The week officially kicked off in Oklahoma with the Worm Parade, a creative and community-driven event that set the tone for the days ahead. Throughout the week, events continued to build momentum, culminating in large-scale celebrations such as Oklahoma’s 5th annual Compost Festival at Scissortail Park, alongside hundreds of local events taking place nationwide.
ICAW continues to grow each year, and 2026 was no exception. Increased participation, expanded digital engagement, and stronger collaboration across organizations contributed to one of the most impactful campaigns to date. Social media played a key role in amplifying the message, with event organizers and participants sharing photos, videos, and stories that showcased composting in action across diverse communities.
This success is made possible by the dedication of ICAW Volunteer Coordinators, who lead efforts at the local level and serve as the driving force behind many of the week’s events. Their commitment to outreach, education, and community building is essential to the continued growth of ICAW.
